What the endless scroll is actually replacing

Keeping our kids off their devices feels like a losing battle, with so many of them averaging over five hours of screen time a day instead of the recommended two. But here is the part that really hits home — all that extra screen time is directly linked to poorer mental health.

But the inverse is also true.

When children reduce screen time and increase movement, outdoor exposure, social interaction, and creative play, we see improvements in mood, resilience, attention, and overall well-being.

The impact of too much screen time

Developmental psychologist Dr. Gordon Neufeld warns that screens are constantly competing for our kids' deep, human need for real connection, offering them cheap digital substitutes that interfere with their emotional development.

We all crave genuine relationships, so let's challenge ourselves to look up from the feed and start rebuilding those real-life bonds.

The digital reset we all desperately need

Let's be honest: that endless scrolling isn't actually helping us unwind. It’s quietly stealing our focus, wrecking our sleep, and draining the energy we need for the real-life moments that actually matter. Let's put the phones on DND and get back to making memories with our favourite people, because that is what makes us feel truly alive and excited about each day.

Logging off for a month changes everything

If you’ve been feeling completely drained by your screen time, please know you are not alone. Students right here in the WILDE community have navigated that exact same struggle, which is why Screen-Free May has grown into such a massive, life-giving movement over the past four years.

The goal is not perfection — it’s awareness and intention

When you actually step away for a month, the shift is incredible — we're talking better moods, laser focus, and getting back to the real-life friendships that actually fill your cup. This is the exact reset that changes everything.

Some Benefits of Going Screen Free

These benefits often build on each other: better sleep leads to brighter moods, which makes it easier to choose real-life activities over screens. Many families notice positive changes within just a couple of weeks of cutting back. Small, consistent shifts (like no screens in bedrooms or during meals) can make a surprisingly big difference for students and parents alike.

Happier Mood & Less Stress

  • Feel calmer and more positive day-to-day.
  • Reduced anxiety and depressive symptoms, so everyday challenges don’t feel as overwhelming.
  • Improved emotional balance and empathy toward family and friends.

Deeper, More Restorative Sleep

  • Fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer without blue-light interference.
  • Wake up actually feeling refreshed and energized instead of groggy or tired.
  • Better focus at school or work, steadier moods, and stronger immune system from consistent good rest.

More Energy & Natural Movement

  • Extra time and motivation to get outside, play sports, or just move around.
  • Stronger body, better posture, and less eye strain or neck/back aches from sitting hunched over.
  • Healthier weight and overall vitality — you simply feel more alive and capable.

Stronger Real-Life Connections

  • More face-to-face time with family and friends, leading to deeper conversations and real support.
  • Improved social skills, feeling less lonely or isolated, and stronger sense of belonging.
  • Richer relationships that actually make you happier and more emotionally secure.

Are you ready to finally feel the difference?

At WILDE, we believe education extends beyond the classroom. We believe childhood should include mud on boots, conversations at the dinner table, challenge and boredom and imagination. We believe attention is one of the most valuable currencies of our time.

Screen Free May is an invitation to reclaim it.
